Apollo

You know, every now and then there is a new technology introduced that claims to be 'revolutionary' but turns out to be nothing more than a re-branded existing technology. This time however I am fairly certain that Adobe have something special on there hands. What is this Apollo you ask, well the definition given over at Adobe Labs is:

Apollo is the code name for a cross-operating system runtime being developed by Adobe that allows developers to leverage their existing web development skills (Flash, Flex, HTML, JavaScript, Ajax) to build and deploy Rich Internet Applications (RIAs) to the desktop.
So what we have here is a way of writing cross platform desktop applications that integrate seamlessly with web applications, whether you want to use Google Maps to store VCards allowing you to quickly locate one of your contacts geographically or should you want to monitor the availability of items on Amazon and receive desktop alerts or even SMS's when said item becomes available, it will all be possible with Apollo. Here is a video of Christian Cantrell from Adobe demoing a few of the applications written on the Apollo platform. I for one am very excited about Apollo and believe it will be the technology to watch in 2007.
